Periostat®
What is Periostat®?
Periostat® is a prescription
oral antibiotic approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It
is used to suppress your body's overproduction of enzymes that destroy
tooth and gum tissue. When used in combination with a deep cleaning, it is an
effective treatment in the battle against periodontal (gum) disease.
How does Periostat® work?
Deep cleaning is effective at removing plaque buildup and reducing
the bacteria that cause gum disease. Bacteria, however, is not the
direct cause of gum and dental bone tissue damage and eventual tooth
loss. The damage is actually caused by your body's own defense against
bacterial infection.
When gum disease is present, the white blood cells sent to combat
the bacterial infection overproduce enzymes that destroy gum and
dental bone tissue that support your teeth faster than the body can
repair or replace it. When used in combination with a deep cleaning,
Periostat® can help slow, stop,
and sometimes reverse periodontal damage by suppressing overproduction
of damaging enzymes and allowing the body to repair and rebuild
damaged tissue. Post-Treatment Care Instructions
Periostat® is a prescription
oral antibiotic product that comes in tablet form. The duration of
treatment is different for each person and depends on the severity of
your gum disease and the time needed for your body's healing process
to repair and rebuild damaged tissue. Your dentist will determine if
you should stop or continue to take Periostat®
based on your response to treatment and the level of improvement of
your gum disease.
